How Often Should You Cut Your Hair? A Simple Schedule That Works

April 18, 2024 6 min Reading Time

The Quick Answer

"Most people should get a haircut every 4 to 12 weeks. Short styles like fades need attention every 2-3 weeks, while long, healthy hair can go up to 12 weeks with proper home care."

"Is it time yet?" It's a question we hear daily in our Mission salon. While everyone's hair grows at roughly half an inch per month, the "need" for a haircut is actually determined by your style and the health of your ends.

The Precision Fade Schedule (2-3 Weeks)

If you wear a skin fade or a sharp lineup, the growth from two weeks is enough to make the transition look "fuzzy." For that crisp, Mission-dapper look, a bi-weekly visit is the gold standard.

Short Hair and Pixie Cuts (4-6 Weeks)

Short styles lose their silhouette quickly. Once the hair around your ears and neck starts to flip or look bulky, it's time for a reshuffle.

Mid-Length Styles (6-8 Weeks)

For bobs or shoulder-length cuts, 6 to 8 weeks is the sweet spot. This allows you to maintain the length without the style becoming unmanageable or losing its "bounce."

Long Hair Maintenance (8-12 Weeks)

If your goal is growth, you might think you should avoid the scissors. The opposite is true! Regular "dusting" (removing just the very tips) prevents split ends from traveling up the hair and causing breakage that forces you to cut off more length later.

Listening to Your Hair

Regardless of the calendar, listen to your hair. If you find your hair is tangling more at the ends, or if your morning styling is taking 10 minutes longer than it used to, those are the signs that a Mission salon visit is overdue.

The Mission Essential Checklist

Identify your 'messy' threshold

Look for split ends under good lighting

Notice if your style has lost its original shape

Use a wide-tooth comb to check for tangles at the ends

Common Questions

Expert Insights

Q. Does cutting hair make it grow faster?

No, but it makes it look thicker and healthier by removing thin, split ends.

Q. Can I go longer if I use good products?

Yes. High-quality conditioners and oils can protect the ends, potentially extending your schedule by 2-3 weeks.

Q. What if I'm growing my hair out?

Tell your stylist! We will perform a 'dusting' to keep it healthy while preserving as much length as possible.
